My partner had a vasectomy 10 yrs ago and we're considering getting it reversed.I've been reading up on success rates and so on, but I'm stuck: he says he got a reversible procedure.I remember hearing of them myself years ago, but cant find anything about it on the web, does anyone know what the difference is between that and a non-reversible procedure? It might make a difference to what kind of op he could have?Maybe I'm clutching at straws??Even if you know of a good place to find out..Thankyou!

Vasectomies were always designated as irreversible procedures. The success rates for reconnecting the plumbing are OK, but for the return of fertility it is much lower. One of the reasons for this is that soon after vasectomy sperm antibodies are often produced, these destroy the sperm. Figures for pregnancy rate after reversal at 10 years are 40% at best.

There is no such thing as a reversible vasectomy thats why you can't find out about it. If the surgeon told him that, it was a lie. He can certainly try to have the procedure reversed but there is no guarantee. The longer he had it done the less chance of success. This doesn't mean that he shouldn't try if you both want it, but the reverse procedure is a proper operation and not just a snip and tuck. Consult your doctor, he will give you the proper information and chances.

If he had the normal vasectomy and it was 10 years ago then I would have thought his tubes were cut in order to try and reverse this they try and join them again and if you look at all the medical books you will see how small they are and how it might not work.
I have never heard of a procedure that would be a reversible one as far as I know in order for vasectomy to work they have to stop the sperm getting along the tubes and the only way to do that is cut them.
Ex husband had a vasectomy years ago!

Anyone having a vasectomy should consider it to be permanent. There is no guarantee that the operation can be reversed. However some reversals are successful you would need to see a consultant for an evaluation of your chances.
