would you be obligated to pay?

Hypothetically speaking, of course.

Legal obligations depend on your local laws. In most places in America the woman may, at any time, go back to court and seek child support up until the child is 18. So my best hypothetical advise is unless you don't want to end up paying for all the back years that you didn't pay, it's best to go ahead and pay now. Since she can change her mind at any time.

Or better yet let the Mom know that you are putting the money aside for the child when he/she is an adult. With the costs of college tuition rising and the cost of living soaring, it's not a bad idea to give him or her a little nest egg.

There are all types of obligations...there are moral obligations and legal obligations, presumed and assumed obligations. You should offer to pay support if not asked. If someone is man enough to create a child with someone they ought to be man enough to support the child. You can discuss this with the child's mother or apply for services to establish a child support order at the local child support enforcement agency.

Everyone has a different opinion here on this type of question I guess. But to answer just the question....No, you would not be legally responsible unless she filed for child support against you. I don't know the situation either, does the dad see the kid, does the kid know his dad, does the mother just not want the man in the child's life?........I mean, as a mother and a woman, I don't think it is fair for a man to have to pay out the butt for child support on a child or children whom he doesn't get to see or be part of their lives.....It is a hard deal either way.

Am the same way. I have 3kids and two fathers between them. 2 with the first marriage and 1 with the second marriage. I don't ask them for nothing. I don't mind if they what to that's up to them. If they want to give to their child or not. Do I think they should yes as their father I figure their dads know their child haves needs I shouldn't have to tell everyday, he a grown man. I day his kids and so are yours could though that in your face, that you never helped or supporting me. If this bothers you then you should set a set rate every month in pay something. But am like your ex . It don't make a different to me but to the child it really doe's.

I always get bent out of shape when I see these kind of questions. Children are not stray animals to be dumped on someone else. If you donated HALF the DNA, then you need to foot HALF the bill, whether or not she asks for it. (I am not dumping on men....I am a woman paying child support on three boys who decided to live with Dad, and do so gladly, because I do not want MY boys to do without ANYTHING!)
If she ever wanted to, she could take you to court for back child support, and in most states, even if you weren't employed, they CHA-CHING up a bill for you as if you were making at least minimum wage the whole time the child was here on this planet. I don't know about anyone else, but I'd rather just take my responsibility upon myself, rather than have it forced upon me because I was a dead beat.

YES! if she is getting any assistance or help from the State or County that they reside in, YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY THEM BACK, then your going to wish you had paid child support from the start!

It would be morality correct thing to do, and if your respectable father you'd would be there financially, emotionally and physically.

Come on your a man of the law, you should know about dead beat dads, hypothetically speaking of course.

thats a moot point, because the honor system doesnt work, thats been proven. thats why the state/federal gov passed stronger laws; they are tired of parents who dont pay for thier children.

GONE are the days of hiding til the child is 18, today, arrears are FOREVER.

If you want to be in your child's life and be a father to your child, I think it wise to help someway financially.
