I was just saying that is what i saw on animal planet. you can go to any website and find a link that will say an animal is the smartest. i don't think we as humans are smart enough to know what the smartest animal is. all we can do is give a list of really smart animals and that's about it. there is no way of actually judging each animal's IQ like we do. because they are all different species. you can easily find out what breed of dog is the smartest, or what like of marine animal is the smartest. but you cant generalize all animals and choose the smartest. they are all smart on different levels.
1.Great apes (Humans and Chimps)
2.New World monkeys
3.Cetaceans (Dolphins and Whales)
4.Canines
5.Pigs
6.Octopus
7.Corvids (Ravens and Crows)
8.Horses
I am not sure what the order is though

I'm assuming you're meaning non-human animal. Even as dumb as we are, I think by most intelligence tests, humans on average would rank pretty high up there.
After humans come my cat. Sure, she doesn't understand Calvin and Hobbes, but otherwise she's pretty bright. She once figured out how to turn on a program that creates voice announcements for everything Windows does just by walking over the keyboard. I didn't even know such a program existed, but my kitty apparently did.
Then comes dolphins. Some would rank dolphins above humans, but until they can figure out how to come here and type out a rebuttal argument, I'm sticking them third.
After them comes other cats. They like to play dumb, but they've already domesticated an entire primate species just to open doors and cans for them.

According to the Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy, humans are the third most intelligent animal on the Earth, after mice and dolphins.
Dolphins are the second most intelligent creatures on Earth (superseded by mice) and tried in vain to warn humans of the impending destruction of the planet. However, their behavior was misinterpreted as playful attempts to whistle for fish and jump through hoops. Their story is told in So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish.

Dolphins
I think they are smarter than us!
*sigh* I suppose I should also ask you to define animal, but really I don't care if you include us or not!
We're probably next.
Elephants are near the top of the list too.

Human beings: Homo sapiens sapiens. Unfortunately, other species in the Homo genus appear to be presently extinct, so the next runner up is:
chimpanzee: Pan troglodytes

Not including humans, I'd say dolphins and octopi myself.
