Stimulating memories depending on if its a 'smell from the past'?
You can actually improve some of the symptoms of dementia by using olfactory stimulation, which enhance recall in older people (ie using familiar smells from their past eg lavender which used to be very popular) but I havent actually read the research.

I'm not a specialist but I can tell you it's important.
For instance I saw on a documentary how to some real food taste specialists was obstructioned the nose with a clench for this experiment.
what resulted was they could not tell the difference between banana and pinapple, because without the smell, the taste was the same.

so the smell tells us if we like something or not
unfortunately, there are a lot of people with sinus problems who can't smell properly all the time
