Good answer Finbar, why should someone who none of us know make decisions on our behalf. How do we know there isn't a wife beater, rapist schizophrenic, thief, or woman(that was a joke) within this so called house of Lords. I don't want potential sickos making rules for me, its the job of elected govt to do that for me. I'm of the opinion, that the house of lords would make a good prison. Let Blair and co debate the politics, not a bunch of hand me down Lords!

Because the monarchy and aristocracy abused their powers in the past, and the proletariat took a lot of their powers away to keep for themselves (a work in progress I believe), especially those to do with monetary matters. A true patriot should know this, after having dutifully attended school like a good citizen and dutifully read his British history books like a good citizen, I didn't have a choice at school, how did you escape it?

Bunking off no doubt. Tut tut. Bad citizen.

Let me educate you on a few other matters my fellow citizen: You can only repeal something that already exists, they may have rejected a BILL but you can only REPEAL a LAW that has received royal assent. A good citizen would also know that.

There is no need for the House of Lords to interfere with immigration as decided in the commons democratically on behalf of the proletariat (that means you and me). Britain claims to be a democracy, citizen. Why don't you know that?

Are you a real patriot, citizen or a fifth columnist trying to stir things up?

Another reason that this dictatorship of a government will use to remove the Lords, which has in the past been the only restraint on the commons that we have had. Just think what this bunch of ignorant misfits would have passed if the Lords had not been in the way.

The government can force things through the house of lords if they want to. So the house of lords couldn't be a complete block on government policy.

Because it doesn't really matter about Super casinos but it nevertheless, looks like they're doing something. On real issues, that of course, is quite different. They might have to stand up and be counted. Sadly, the truth is, the House of Lords is about as useful as a one-armed wallpaper hanger!

Because the Government would then vote to lessen the power of the Lords.

Yes, they are doing their job, and have done so for centuries. That is why New Labour are trying to get rid of them, or at least, trying to radically reform them, so that they can't prevent them pushing controversial legislation through in future.

The best argument against the Lords is that nobody would be happy being operated on by an hereditary cardiac surgeon so why let hereditaries legislate?
