Replanting Tulip Bulbs From A Potted Plant?

Question

I have a very nice pot with five tulips that recently bloomed. The flowers are about gone now. What is the best way and time to transfer the bulbs into the ground for blooming next spring? Can I plant them now or should I wait until fall? What do I do with bulbs until they're ready to plant? Do I take off the stems from the bulbs?

I'm in Denver, so there's plenty of cold weather in the winter.

Tulips will only re-bloom satisfactorily if you have COLD winters (some freezing periods, at least). I live in the San Francisco Bay area (California). We treat tulips like annuals here (plant in the fall after staying 6 weeks in a refrigerator, bloom in the spring, never comes up again).

If you have enough cold in your area (or just want to experiment), set the pot out in your yard (can be a hidden place) where it will get regular water. After the leaves turn brown, you can cut them off. (Leave leaves on until they are brown to give the bulbs food for next years flowers). In the fall, you can take the bulbs out of the pot, separate and plant (be sure to put some blood meal in the bottom of the hole for quick start energy).

Let the existing stems die down naturally untill they are completely brown. You can plant them now rather than waiting, try to get the bulbs down about 3 times their own height so a one inch bulb would be planted at a depth of 3 inches but a 2 inch bulb needs to be down 6 inches... If you wait till fall, be sure to plant them early enough for them to develop a good root system.

Let the leaves die off.
Take the bulbs out of the pot and put them in a cool dry spot.
In the fall I would plant them 6 inches deep and you should have flowers in spring!

Once the leaves have died off you could plant them now but you will not have flowers till next year.

if u live up north, u plant them in the fall so they can freeze over the winter. just leave them in the pot until fall treating them as u would any plant. Plant them the same depth as they r now and cut the stems off if they r still around in the fall.
If u live so. of lake okeechobee in fla. u can plant them now, at the same depth and maybe they will bloom next year but probably not.
