I have to have a decent grasp on Illustrator 8 by the fall and I'm not sure if I should get illustrator for dummies or some other book. There are CS2 books as well, but I'm not sure how this program compares and if you can use the same literature.

Well in fact you may not need to buy any books at all, or pay anything for a start... If you just want to get going, it's available for free.

To learn the basics of how to best use any Adobe creative application (including Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, etc), there are actually dozens of extensive free books that you can legally download instantly, and it won't cost you a cent to get them

Frankly, while the books can be helpful, I would suggest visiting Adobe's website. They have always made some exceptional training available on their site - and much of it is free. Their videos are great, and make learning faster and easier.
