Depending on your range and your purpose - For newer convertibles there are lots of options - Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky, Pontiac G6, VW Eos, Ford Mustang, Mazda Miata - I assume you mean a used vehicle to keep costs down and in that case I would look to a used import such as a VW Cabrio, BMW 3-Series, Saab 9-3 (or 900), Volvo C70, or go way down to even a Chevrolet Cavalier/Pontiac Sunfire or the Chevrolet Camaro/Pontiac Firebird.

There's the 6cyl Mustang, not the GT one. I like the Miata MX-5 with the retractible hardtop. Search around and see what you like. Visit dealerships to view the cars and check out the prices.

I would choose, a Ford Mustang. I got one when I was at high school and its still running good now. Or there can be other choices like the Chevys and the Pontiacs

the low end of the spectrum will be the chrysler lebaron. these cars are cheap, and may be the price tag you're looking for.
there are also V6 mustang convertibles that can be had for a couple grand.
