I have a couple items for sale in local papers. I keep getting these 'buyers' that want to give me a check for a couple thousand dollars more than what I'm asking, and have me refund the difference. It smells like a scam - is it? What's the purpose?

They give you the check and get the cash from you and before it clears your bank they empty their account and you get stuck with fees and they get your cash and the item you are selling

SCAM CITY, SISTER!

They give you a check but the check is no good. You take it to your bank and you end up with collection fees and they have your money.

RUN THE OTHER WAY!!!

Insist on cash or cashiers check from a bank which could still be fake, but less likely....

They send you a bad check or money order, and you send them the difference in cash, before the bank realizes that the deposit is bad.

In other words, it's a scam. DO NOT fall for it!

biggest scam out there, they send you what looks like a good money order for more then your sell price, you send them the item plus extra cash for difference then few weeks later the money order comes back as no good back charges you for the amount of the money order bam
