There's no such thing. Mainly because legal research is vital to the practice of law. So, a big part of law school and paralegal school is to train the students on how to research law. This means, every lawyer and paralegal has a research job in law.

Now, there are lawyers and paralegals who do nothing but research for their jobs, but they didn't exactly structure their studies to land such a job. There's no course of study to become such a thing. If you want to be a lawyer, just pick something that interests you and get the best grades you can. As a new lawyer at a big firm, you do nothing but research and other grunt work anyways.

Lawyers either do their own research or have other lawyers or paralegals that do it. Judges have law clerks to do the job, and you have to have a law degree or paralegal degree to do that. In that capacity, you are normally researching caselaw - finding previously decided cases that back up the position of the lawyer in the case. So, to answer your question, you need to be a lawyer or paralegal.

Sometimes other kinds of researching is done, but that is typically done one a case-by-case basis. For instance, if you have a personal injury case or medical malpractice case, and you need to research the related injury, you get a medical expert. There are companies out there that do this, and they employ doctors and registered nurses.

Hope this gives you an idea.
