1.) First you take 4 and multiply it by x and then by 2.
then you have 4x+8^2=16
2.) Next you take 8 to the power of 2, in other words 8 x 8. That equals 64.
then you have 4x+64=16
3.) Next you subtract 64 to eliminate it and then subtract 64 from 16. That equals -48.
then you have 4x= -48.
4.) Divide 4 and -48 by 4. (This eliminates the 4 in 4x)
then you have x= -12
5.) Answer is x= -12
(As much as it sounds confusing, it is actually quite easy if you understand distributive property.)

4(x+2)^2 = 16 => (x+2)^2 = 4 => x+2 = +-2
x+2 = +2 => x = 0
x+2 = -2 => x = -4

1. Divide by 4
(x+2)^2 = 4
2. Take square root of each side
x+2 = +/-2
3. Subtract 2
x=0/-4
4. Check
(x=0)
4(0+2)^2 = 16
4(4) = 16
16 = 16
and
(x=-4)
4(-4+2)^2 = 16
4(4) = 16
16=16

4(x+2)^2=16
divide by 4
(x + 2)^2 = 4
multiply it out
x^2 + 4x + 4 = 4
subtract 4
x^2 + 4x = 0
factor out an x
x(x + 4) = 0
solve each part for 0
x = 0
x + 4 = 0
x = -4
so, x = -4,0
