The headline reads: “Dems: Bush must accept Iraq timetable”
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070328/ap_on_go_co/us_iraq;_ylt=A0WTUe0iawpGdNYAKQCs0NUE

This is ignorant, and quite frankly, I am fed up with some of the Washington attitudes in general. Lives are at stake both overseas and at home. Whether you are part of the President's party or not, there are some issues that should overstep partisan boundaries. Please. Let us keep our eye on the ball.

The Democrats are now in the position of saying they are engaged in a long, drawn out war in which hard determination will carry them through to victory...the only problem is that they are conducting this war against the President of the United States rather than against the enemies of the United States. I don't think there's ever been such a sad, disgusting spectacle in American politics before. Keep that in mind: to the Democrats and their kook left base, President Bush is the enemy of America...not the terrorists in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, etc, etc, etc..

There is no sense to that "logic".

It is categorically wrong to announce to your enemy: "oh, yeah, we're gonna leave your country in a few weeks".

Any withdrawal should be done covertly.
Just like this whole damn war should have been.
And what I mean is that there should have been a media blackout from the start.
None of this "embedded journalist" stuff.

Look - don't get me wrong.
I am a major supporter of first amendment rights.
I would rather have a free press without government than a free government without the press.

But in war, like poker, keep the cards close to your chest.

Damn Rumsfled was so damn confident that we could roll into Iraq with just a few poorly equipped troops and NO exit strategy and that we'd be welcomed as liberators and that the cost of the war would be paid for by Iraqi oil revenue...that he decided to allow the news media to tag along.

Stupid...stupid...stupid.

War is war, not some PR job for the pleasure of the president or his bone-head secretary of defense.

So, now that we've really screwed up things in Iraq, we should be looking to find an exit strategy.
JUST DON'T TELL THE ENEMY!

You may disagree with this approach, but there is at least one way in which it makes a lot of sense. If you announce your timetable for withdrawing, you are announcing it to your friends as well as your allies. Many have complained that the Iraqis haven't done enough of the fighting themselves--they have let us shoulder the burdens. Only by making it clear to the Iraquis that there is a time certain after which they will be responsible for defending themselves will we be able to motivate them to do what is necessary to take over the responsibilities.

I'm not saying I agree with this analysis. I don't know enough about the realities within the country to say. But I also true agree with a previous writer: I'm no longer sure who our enemies are over there. It appears to be everyone except those who have a direct interest in our being there to preserve whatever is their current position.

I think a lot of the answers so far reflect analogies with other wars that are nothing like this one. If you took a national survey, what percentage of the American people do you think could correctly identify who it is we are fighting and why? We achieved "regime change," which was not one of the original reasons for going there. Now what?

And finally, here is a question. If we stay in Iraq, for how long should we do so? How will we know when the war is over, one way or another?

Who are our enemies? If you can figure that out you're doing better than the rest of the military advisors because as it turns out a good majority of our allies are our enemies. I think it's time we send the message that we should have sent all along - it's time for the Iraqi people to fight for their own democracy. And you may say - "But they don't want democracy" to which I say - what is this all about!!!!!

P.S. I have a family member serving in Iraq so don't tell me that I'm not supporting the troops and all that. Also, don't tell me that it is only the democrats who play politics - you know that isn't true.

Every last thing the Democrats have done smacks of assuring that terrorism prevails ..beginning with the Clinton White House . If the drive-by media isn't committing treason , it's the Democrats in Washington . They're like a tag team for crying out loud . For another thing - I bet if JFK was still alive -that brother of his ( Chappaquiddick Teddy ) would not be aiding & abetting terrorism .

It makes no sense whatsoever, unless your last name is Clinton. Then again in a month it won't have been her fault, she'll swear she voted for the war.

They don't care about the troops they only care about poisioning the minds of Americans and blaiming the Bush administration for all the world's problems.

The Dems just want to make sure that the drawdown will happen prior to the next election in Nov '08. Thats why they have the Sept '08 deadline.

PLAIN PARTISAN POLITICS AT THE TROOPS EXPENSE.

It's a plain stupid thing to do! although I do not support the war in the first place, I still think it's just mind-blowing to retreat this way...just my opinion!
