the reason for this is you havent installed your graphic card drivers, better known as the display drivers,to do this you need to first find out what garphic card you have
to do this right click the desktop and then properties, this will take you to display properties, then click on the settings tab and then the name of your card will be there next to the name of your monitor(usually plug,n,play monitor or defualt monitor)
then go to the respective website, usually nvidia(http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp) or a.t.i radeon(http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html)and download the driver,on both sites there is a easy guide to locate the correct driver file
when downloaded install the driver by following the instructions and restart the computer after installation(important)
when the p.c has restarted you need to go to display properties again and then to the settings tab,and then set your resolution to the required settings,if you have a 17" monitor then a setting of 1024x768 is acceptable but if you only have a 15" monitor then dont go higher than 800x600
however i like many others use a 19" tft monitor and i set my resolution to 1280x1024 ,once you have set your resolution to the required size then go to the advanced tab on the settings page and then to the monitor tab, there you will see a refresh rate drop down box,set this to the highest possible rate, there should be a box with "show only rates this monitor can support"make sure this is ticked so you will only be able to set refresh rates compatible to your monitor
once this has been done your display will be fully configured, but by right clicking the desktop you can go to your respective graphic cards control panel to set more advanced settings such as antianilising and antistropic filtering but these are normally left to "application controlled"
finally if you want to test your graphic cards direct x capabilities you can run the direct x diagnostic utility by going to start>run>and typing dxdiag >return,,,,this will let you run several tests such as display, sound and music test suing using direct x
note:as a bt total broadband user myself, you dont need to install all the software if you are using a ethernet connection, this is only needed when using u.s.b connectivity, however if you wish to use the security software provided by b.t yahoo then you will need to install this software, but trust me mate, its pretty basic security, even compared to a.v.g or avast anti-virus,you dont think bt will give you something for nothing
i use avast4.7(http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)and its 100% compatible with the bt software and router(home hub)and in the last 12 months since i have used avast i have had no viruses,so i would recommend you give this a go
also try spybot(http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html)as a anti-spyware tool, this has the added protection of scanning and cleaning spyware but imunizing your p.c from future attacks
also the free windows download"defender " is a highly rated program that works well with both avast and spybot, you can download "defender" from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=435BFCE7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en
i have wrote this extra info as you are a bt customer and dont want you to have to reinstall windows again as its a real pain
any problems let me know
good luck mate
