Whoever said they were supposed to be dramas? I think they are meant to be comedies! What kills me is when the actors switch from one soap to a different one. They are basically the exact same character -- just a different name!

I don't watch soap operas. However, I have a theory.
First the stories have to be outlandish to keep the attention of the fans. Your asking for a huge commitment from the fans. they have to tune in daily without end. Second the acting schedule is harsh. they get up at 5 am and get the script which they must memorize for a 7or 8 am shoot. There no time to practice and get a feel for the part. its fast food acting. Because as soon as its in the can we start on the next one and so on. Most Soap Operas are filmed 6 months ahead of the tv release. This is so they have a cushion from actors leaving the show. Accidents or Pregnancies. Giving the writers ample time to rewrite the story.

Finally, its considered by many in the industry as entry level acting. Once an actor feels they have made a name for themselves they leave for bigger things like Prime time TV or Motion Pictures. I feel for this reason you end up with inexperience actors or mediorce actors. The seasoned professional actors feel they are wasted here and move on.

Plus the level of fame is fleeting. Only fans of soap operas know your name. Case in point. Genie Francis of General Hospital fame was the toast of the town. Her husband Jonathan Frakes was an unknown actor. He later got the role of Cmdr William Riker of Star Trek Next Gen. Genie left GH and was quickly forgotten. However Mr Frakes was mega popular. Even after his series ended he is still recognized where his wife isn't. Soap fame just isn't wide spread enough to keep its best actors. but this is all a theory.

They are meant to be that way. Because lots of people have no lives so they watch the soaps religiously. They actors have to be cheesy or overreact because folks at home need a little drama and intrigue in their lives. My mom watches like she's in a trance. Sometimes the actors/characters seem real to those who hardly ever get out of the house.

You're probably watching Passions or Days of our Nitwits (I mean lives). Watch Young and The Restless, Guiding Light, or General Hospital-they are much better.

it seems cheesy because the shows are taped live and not like a movie, so the acting is natural and not rehearsed
