Rudolf Hess was the last to be held there though a number of spies during WWII were shot in Mint Street in the grounds.Hess was the last official prisoner there people like the Krays may have been held in military custody as it is still a military Establishment but wouldn't have been classed as prisoners actually committed to be detained in the Tower.

Think this might have been an Irish gent by the name of Joyce, otherwise known to war time Britons as Lord Haw-haw. He was tried, I think for treason or as a traitor. However, being a citizen of Ireland, he could not have been a traitor to Britain. A lot of people in UK were unhappy about it but then so what, they said. Joyce was captured by a British Army sergeant in the woods of Berlin. If he had kept his mouth shut or only spoken in German, he might very well have got away. But, he spoke in that familiar Irish voice and got arrested and marched off. The rest is history. Joyce I think was held at the Tower of London, which is where traitors are held, having first passed through traitor's gate by boat from the river.

I heard something on a quiz show this week that said the Kray twins were the last people held at the Tower, but according to the link I found (below) they were only "among the last", so I'm not suure exactly how one would classify it - very last prisoner to leave, I suppose?

Hello
The Tower Of London was built in 1078 by William the Conquerer.
The last person to be held in the tower was a Nazi German by the name of Rudolph Hess in 1941.(He comitted suicide in 1987).
The last known execution (1941) was of Josef Jakobs another German spy.
German sypies were the first non-royals to be executed here (either by firing squad of strapped to a chair and drowned in the moat). Eleven in total were killed between 1914 and 1916.
Anyway I think that answers your question. Please email me if you need to know more :P

Hugs and kisses

The 41 crew members of the U-Boat U39, together with their captain Gerhard Glattes, were held in the Tower last.

I believe the last prisoner to be held in the tower is Rudolph Hess, why or how this happened I have no idea.
