i am spanish and my fiancee is white, before meeting him i had never heard the phrase "i need space," we have been dating for 4 years and very committed and monogamous about our relationship, but sometimes he tells me that guys need space and that is to rejuvinate, i respect it but i've never had to deal with this, i mean i have had american boyfriends before, but never really paid attention to it.
In my culture that phrase does not even exist, or is it just in my circle of family and friends that it doesnt???
Is it a cultural difference?????

Well my spouse is german and its definately a saying for him!

Maybe you just really love this guy, and subcontionously are being really needy towards him (i do it to dont worry its normal)

I dont know if he says he needs his space all the time? But my spouse only says it when we are fighting, he needs time to calm down. And thats because he doesnt want to say something he will regret.

Is your boyfriend using it in that way? That he needs to get over the fight and calm down, or things are getting to stressful and he needs to just think. If so its perfectly normal.

It might be, I'm not really sure...talk to him about it, tell him you don't know what you're supposed to do or how to deal with it, I'm sure he'll try to help you understand...but guys just sometimes need time away from us, to be with their friends or relax...as long as he's being good to you about it and not ignoring you I'm sure it will be fine

Guys need time to be with their friends, play sports, go to the gym or whatever. If you're talking about a few hours a week that's normal. If he needs weeks at a time away from you, that's not normal.
Don't you ever want to go shopping, get your hair done, see your girlfriends, etc. without him?
