He wakes in the street, cold and alone
She shivers, afraid in the doorway
the businessman he flips open his phone
Like its just any other day
Business as usual..keep one step ahead
don't look o'er your shoulder
you might glimpse the walking dead
It's safer to keep that head in your folder
It's so much easier that way
You vote, pay your taxes
you're a straight man, not gay
so just worry about work and those faxes
it's so much easier that way
I don't hear the boy screaming
Can't imagine what he'd say
claiming what...no he's only dreaming
It's so much easier that way
Past the lines of unemployment
People waiting for their pay
Those soldiers ready for deployment
It's so much easier that way
An abortion clinic..protesters out side
Would it become another melee
Is that the reason they cried
Walk faster, just walk faster..that's what I'd say
Ignore homeless, the needy, and those who are gay
Crime, injustice, that's just life's array
Look no closer at reality, it's just another day
It's just so much easier that way
Here is a quickie I just composed. It might give you some ideas of how to incorporate societal themes into poetry.
Feel free to borrow any or all. I hope it spurs you on to think about what's going on.
Good Luck

all good suggestions already. Some additional ones --
The greying of America (baby boomers aging, not enough new workers to replace them, health care collapse)
why in such a successful society, we still have situations like the recent story about a hospital dumping homeless patients on skid row.
why people still smoke, drink to excess and overeat, even knowing how bad it is for them
why America's schools aren't the best in the world, even though we have so many resources
why countries decide to waste their citizens and resources on wars over ideas
Boy, you could be writing poems on these topics for the next 10 years!

The child on the street corner who raises himself and learns about life the hard way.
The kid who sleeps through school because his/her mom or dad came home last night drunk and yelled at them or beat them up.
The homeless person who has long since given up on the American dream and instead is satisfied to live one meal at a time with no concept of a better life they can achieve.
The high school senior who loses his best friend in a drunk driving accident or accidental overdose the first time the kid tries drugs or alcohol.
The girl who forgets about protection or is pressured from the boy to not stop only to wind up pregnant with all her dreams and the rest of her life crumbling around her. And her quest to rediscover new dreams and achievements, rediscovering her strength as an adult and a mother.
Is that enough of a start?

Watch the news and read a newspaper.
Then write about something you heard or saw there that you think is wrong or unfair. That will be a way to get started.
