I used to sell women's shoes and your problem is a common one. Look for a heel that is wider. Don't go for a thin stilletto as it wont be comfortable to walk in. look for a decent amount of padding in the innersole, and look for a modest incline from toe to heel. If your foot is held at a high angle that will be very uncomfortable for you. You may be able to find a shoe that straps or ties at the ankle, giving you a bit more support. You could also purchase special foam pads for your toes and heels or even full innersoles to make them more comfortable. Good luck!

Look for heels with a thicker heel and an ankle strap. Also, slides (backless heels) are usually harder to walk in.
Have fun at the gala!

Try to find a blocky heel, as opposed to something that looks pointed (stilletto). For an example, click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Platform_court_shoes-Calderone-open_toes-cream.jpg .
The only other advice I can tell you is that you need to practice, practice, practice! You have a month to prepare, and ANY heels that you walk in may prove to be a bit awkward at first. Wear them around the house, just to get a good feel for them, and you'll be gliding across the room at the gala without worry.

High heels are the worst thing a woman can wear but fashion dictates. Try to find a pair of shoes that have a wide sole, like wedges instead of pencil point heels and you should be a little steadier on your feet.

Or, buy some nice flats. They are safer than high heels.
You would do better with flats since you obviously cannot wear heels. It doesn't matter if they tie or have a thicker heel or whatever (never believe a shoe salesperson). They still knock your feet out of whack.
There's no law that says you have to wear heels. Better to wear a nice pair of flats than need surgery later.

Just get a pair with not too tall of a heel, and practice wearing them daily around the home. Within two weeks, you'll be doing pretty well.

I would advise against stillettos if you are new to the heel thing. But other than that: practice practice practice
