With motor cold. Remove the valve covers. Remove the cap that shows the timing marks on the stator and the cover that allows you to put a wrench on the flywheel bolt. Rotate the motor in the direction it runs in (If you turn the motor backwards it will make a growling sound. turn it the other way.) while watching the intake valve. When the intake valve opens (goes down) and closes (comes back up) go to TDC on the flywheel. You are now at TDC on your compression stroke. This is where you adjust the valves.

Check your valve clearance and adjust if needed. Rotate the motor a few revolutions and check it again. Replace the covers and caps and run. If you hear a loud clatter or clacking then you were not on the correct stroke when you adjusted the valves. Start over.

The clearance spec should be on a sticker on your machine. Maybe under the seat???? It's in the owner's manual also. I have that info in my tool box, but it's at home. Contact me if you don't find it and I will e-mail it to you. I think it's .003 on the intake and .006 on the exhaust, but my memory isn't always so good.
