I have a few sciatica attacks every now and again too (from some buldging discs in my spine - very common cause)...and I've had a tylenol w/ codien perscription for it since before I was pregnant.
When I found out I was pregnant I asked the doctor what I should do if I have another attack. He said to just take the tylenol with codien. When I asked if that was safe, the doctor explained to me that narcotics are actually much less damaging to our bodies than our basic over-the-counter pain killers; they just don't sell them over the counter because for some people, they are also very addictive.
Also, if you're like me and have back spasms, it's really important to get them to stop because they can potentially put you into early labor.
BTW - I haven't had an attack so far in my pregnancy, and I think a big reason for that is my boss bought me a new chair with a really nice soft-strong lumbar support - I think that little thing has made a huge difference for me so far.

Codeine is in FDA Category C. Pregnancy Category C means Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
Having said that, it is fairly common for dr.s to prescribe it for pain during pregnancy. I know sciatica can be extremely painful. I'm so sorry! I was also prescribed tylenol w/ codeine when I was in my third trimester w/ my second daughter bcs I had gallstones.
I think that at this point, being in pain and stressed out is worse for the baby than a little medication. Try not to worry about it too much. Just take it as prescribed. I hope you are feeling better soon...

I took it when I was that prego too. Don't worry everything will be just fine. Just follow the directions as it said to just no more than directed and everything will be OK...try not to worry.
Have you tried a heating pad for your back? I made my own heating pad to use when I was pregnant and my back was hurting. I filled a clean tube sock full of rice and tied it at the end. Then I microwaved it for 2 minutes...put it on my back where it hurt and it felt great. The sock just wrapped around my body and fit it perfectly. Better than just a regular heating pad...plus no cords. Just thought I would share my tip with you.
Also you can see about taking Motrin...that helps a lot on my back pains. Check with the doctor or local pharmacist.
Good luck and I do hope you feel better soon =)

Anything you take goes to the baby. If you are that worried about it then just take regular tylenol and get some sleep. If it wasnt safe I am sure the doc wouldnt have given to you.

Take 'em They'll help. There probably isn't enough narcotic in them to hurt the baby at 36 weeks. You can call the pharmacy and talk to someone. They'll tell you if there's any risk.

My doctor has given me a running prescription for tylenol with codeine for my migraines throughout this pregnancy, if you trust your doctor and he is reputable I wouldn;t imagine he would give you something unsafe. I trust mine way more than all the busybodies on here with no medical degree to speak of who tell us what we can and cannot do.

Your doctor oviously knows that you are pregnant and wouldn't intentionaly prescribe you something that would hurt that baby. Call them and tell him that you are concerned and he will reassure you or tell you to stop taking it.

i went to a physical therapist it helped so much. codeine is the one med i think is safe for pregnant women. when i was pregnant and sick thats what i was given. and for junior mints rock you shouldnt take painkillers for migraines it will help them go away but when the drug wears off it will most likely come right back. i have migraines and seen specialists for it and thats what theyve told me.
