My seven and a half month old son was running a fever this weekend...we took him to the emergency room on sunday because it spiked up to 103...they checked him out and said it was a middle ear infection, they sent us home with a script for amoxicillin......yesterday he started having a bit of diahrrea and a rash all over his body....so we went to the doctors today and he said that the ER misdiagnosed him with an ear infection, he does not have an ear infection, that it happens all the time, if the baby is crying and the ear turns red from crying, the baby gets put on antibiotics which will fix just about whatever happens to be the real problem. He said that the diahrrea is probably from the amoxicillin and the rash is called roseola...roseola is a rash you get when the fever breaks....
In summery the doc said it was just roseola, a fever that ends in a rash, that most babies get in their first year.
He said i should stop the antibiotics because they are causing diahrrea.
Anyone

my children have never been misdiagnosed, but i can tell you that my doctors do not prescribe antibiotics any longer for ear infections. They give an ointment that eases the pain a child feels with an ear infection and reccomend staggering Tylenol and ibuprofen to help with pain management. Excessive use of antibiotics is not good. I hope your child starts feeling better soon. My girls are 9 and 3 1/2 and have not used antibiotics for ear infections since 2003, they get them every so often throughout the year.

It sounds like the second doctor knows what he's talking about about the diahrrea and rash but I would keep and eye on the baby. If he starts pulling at his ear and fussing, he could actually have an ear infection. If it's middle ear, he will probably have dizziness too, so that is something to watch for.

I would be mad. Yeah it was just a misdiagnosed ear infection but what if it was something worse! I don't want to sound like a ***** but I would make sure the doctor that I saw in the er knew that they misdiagnosed your kid.

Itleast they would know and you don't have to chew them out be poliete and tell you just wanted to let them know that it was roseola and your son is good.

sounds like the Dr.'s office knows what they are talking about, i would just call the hospital and ask for the emergency room supervisor and express what happened at your er visit, they need to know about this also i would never let that er doctor near my child ever, you are fortunate that the mistake didn't cause a serious problem and you are a good parent for not waiting when the other problems developed;SMILE!
