Variations in pressure or temperature. When you are looking at a weather map, a low indicated by an L usually has a number associated with it. Highs indicated by an H do as well and they are given in millibars. The closer together and the more difference between the numbers, the higher the wind will be. The wind will be flowing from a high pressure to a low pressure.

On the referenced map, there is a low in Colorado of 998 mb. There is a high in Alberta, Canada of 1034. The wind is likely pretty strong in Wyoming where the lines of pressure are close together.

I hope that assists you.
