I think they are very overrated. They haven't won a bowl game in the last 8 years. This is because of the agreements and contracts that they have with the BCS and other bowl game sponsors that allow them to play in games that they do not deserve to play in. I don't hate them but because of this. Remember Notre Dame was a national powerhouse in the past they have worked the system to get what the want and need. Let's not forget that in D-1A the money that football teams bring in are supporting ALL of the other athletic programs at their respective university. Notre Dame has made these deals that allow them to remain and independent in football (Big East in other sports) and still maintain their other athletic programs. So lets not hate them for what the media and networks are doing for them.

Over-rated, over-hyped, you name it.
They put up good numbers against crap schools (Army, Stanford, etc.) and get inflated rankings. No other school playing their schedule would get ranked nearly as high, but just because it's "the Irish" they're in the top 15 or top 10 or whatever after a rousing beatdown of the Air Force academy. All this has only gotten worse since Jabba the Hut aka Charlie Weis took over.
Look at last season, by the time they played Army towards the end of November they were ranked 6th. 6th!!!! The only top 20 team they had beaten was a roughed up Penn State team that spent the season underachieving.
Same story every year. Then they'll run into a legit team, and get mowed over. Apologies to the Notre Dame faithful, you've got a great football tradition, but it's SO true.

Notre Dame Football was "America's Team" back when radio - in its very early years - first started airing sports; the team had national syndication, which continues today.
The NBC deal is the only way the program can keep its indepdent stautus; no NBC, then ND would probably be in the Big Ten. There has to be interest or NBC would not have exclusive ND rights for the home games.
The university does a good job in getting the athletes focused on receiving degrees. In what is essentially Class AAA (Division I-A) play for the NFL, I will give props to any school that tries to bring "classroom" into the equation.

Over-rated, over-hyped, you call it. They publish sturdy numbers against crap colleges (military, Stanford, and so on.) and get inflated rankings. No different college enjoying their time table could get ranked virtually as extreme, yet purely by using fact that is "the Irish" they are in the coolest 15 or good 10 or regardless of after a rousing beatdown of the Air tension academy. All this has purely gotten worse on condition that Jabba the Hut aka Charlie Weis took over. look finally season, via the time they performed military in direction of the top of November they have been ranked 6th. 6th!!!! the only good 20 group that they had crushed exchange right into a roughed up Penn State group that spent the season underachieving. same tale each 365 days. Then they're going to run right into a respectable group, and get mowed over. Apologies to the Notre Dame devoted, you have have been given a great soccer custom, even though it is so actual.

OVERRATED!!!! They havn't won a bowl game since 1994. I live near South Bend and I can honestly say that ND fans are the prime example of "band wagon" fans. Last year when ND beat N. Carolina, you would of thought they just won the national title! As soon as they loose, the irish fan base drops by 50% and the true irish fans search for lame excuses like, "the bad call by the official in the first half set the tone for the rest of the game" or "we lost because the green game jerseys are to slippery." The excuses are rediculous! Just admit you lost! There is no shame in loosing to a better team.
How many more embarressing bowl losses will it take for the BCS and tv anchors realize that ND's era of greatness is nothing but a memory?

In my opinion, it is a little overrated. People tend to like that school because of the "fighting irish" name. (Everyone loves irish people). But more importantly, its always been considered a top football school, when there are plenty other schools that are better. In recent years it hasn't produced any top NFL players. The program is still good and i cant take anything from it. But it is a little overhyped. PLus Charlie Weis is a bit ignorant and thinks he is the best coach to land in the NCAA. Schools like Michigan Ohio State Florida USC LSU have been a little more consistent. If they have a good year without Brady this year, then they can be considered a good school and that their resurgence as a football program is for real. They are always a favorable team because of their marketablility. They generate more money for the sport than any other team in the college game.

I think they have become a little over-rated, especially since Weis took over as head coach. Aside from that, the one thing that people seem to love about ND is the rivalries. They have rivalries against USC, Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, and Indiana. In addition to their annual games against the military academies, that in itself, would make up their own conference. Then there are other factors like their history, tradition, catchy fight song, etc...

i think they are treated too favorably by the bcs and by certain people such as lou holtz...because they are such a big money-maker for the sport, they have that special deal with the bcs in which they automatically earn a spot if they are in the top 8 i think in the standings, potentially taking a spot in a prestigious game and also millions of dollars away from schools which are more deserving, like wisconsin this year for example

If I was an Independent I would win 12 chamionshis also. They brake more NCAA rules than any other team. ESPN Classic is the biggest recruiting in fotball and Mike Gohlic is breaking rules. They are all stuck up football players who complain when a call does not always go there way. Finaly THEY SUCK!
