Plan ahead
Prior to visiting, take a look at the Zoo map along with our directional map. Take a moment to review alternate driving directions and to identify the locations of the Zoo’s parking lots. If you will be using the internet to plan your directions – our address is 3400 W. Girard Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19104.
Review our ticket and membership options – purchasing and printing out your tickets online will greatly reduce wait times at the Zoo’s main entrance.
Want to avoid crowds and school groups?
Durning the months of April, May, and June, plan your visit for a non-holiday Monday, Saturday or Sunday mornings, or weekdays after 1 p.m. During the summer, visit weekday mornings, or daily after 2:00pm.
Hint for quicker entry (great tip for members!)
With your membership card and/or tickets in-hand, you can enter the Zoo through the Channel 6 Zooballoon Plaza. Zoo maps are available at this location.
Visit in winter
Yes, the Zoo is open year-round* so come out when you can have the gardens almost to yourselves! Although some outdoor exhibits may be closed (if temperatures drop below 50 degrees), many animals naturally enjoy the winter weather – especially our Amur tigers, snow leopards, and polar bears. All of our indoor exhibits are open and heated so you can alternate between indoor and outdoor fun.
Rainy days are great at the Zoo
It’s not just the ducks who enjoy a drizzly day! Gear-up with boots and umbrellas and watch the animals enjoy a spring shower.
Wear comfortable shoes!
There’s a lot to see and do at the Zoo! Although the majority of our paths are paved, you may find yourself on a grassy area. Please note that Heely’s (sneakers with wheels) are not permitted in the Zoo.
Please leave the following items at home (yes, we have seen them all):
roller skates, roller blades, skateboards, tricycles, scooters, household pets (including hermit crabs), straws, glass bottles, balloons, balls, water guns, slingshots, radios, Frisbees, crazy string, and hacky sacks. This is not a complete list, so be mindful of the safety and comfort of our animals and guests when packing for your trip.
For Shutter Bugs!
Personal and non-commercial photography is permitted. However, tripod use may be restricted in certain Zoo exhibits or, at the discretion of Zoo staff, where there are large crowds present. Commercial photography and filming requests must be made in advance through the Zoo’s Public Relations Department. Please call 215-243-5205 for more information.

We were just there last week. Many of the animals will be in because it is too cold. It will not be crowded. You will have a great time. You will be able to park close. Get great views of the animals that are out. The only lunch spot open will sell Nathan's Hot dogs, Hamburgers, Chicken Sandwiches and Cheese Steaks ... So if that is not what you are looking for pack a lunch. The Big Cats are out and active! Get the membership it is about the same price and you can come back another time when all of the animals will be out. Some of the Bathrooms may be closed- make sure you don't wait to the last minute (My husband went searching at the last minute- since we are familiar with the zoo and the closest bathroom was closed!!! haha!) You can expect more hands on attention from zookeepers...this is a great time to go if you have questions!!! these animals were not out: Hippos, tortises, Giraffes, polar bears. The Zoo Balloon was down, and the swan boats were not working. You will enjoy the big cats, Elephants, Zebras, gorrillas, Monkeys, Rare Birds, Reptiles, penguins, Flamingos, Peacocks, Bears...and many more animals. The Children's Zoo is open but part of it is under repair! Enjoy!!!

On Thursday April 5th you can expect the zoo to be quite crowded because many area schools will be on spring break.

when you arrive, take a good look at the map, and the information on it. They have public feedings, etc, listed on there.
Going to the zoo, during the week, this time of the year is very good, because the kids are not doing field trips yet.
