Under anhydrous conditions, aluminium metal will react with hydrogen chloride gas to produce anhydrous aluminium chloride.

2Al + 6HCl -----> 2AlCl3 + 3H2

This is one of only two ways of making anhydrous AlCl3. The other is with dry chlorine.
