you should drain about half the fluid out of the radiator before you change the thermostat, when you do loosen the thermostat you will lose a little fluid but not a whole lot, install the new one with a new gasket and bolt down and refill the radiator with the fluid you saved from draining the radiator.

Not much at all. Just replace it and don't worry about it. But make sure to get the new thermostat back in just like the old one you take out. There's an arrow indication for the direction of coolant flow on the thermostat. Wait for the engine to cool before you loosen the upper radiator hose at the thermostat bell housing. Now's a good time to replace the upper radiator hose if it's more than 7 years old.

Mr. Z missed this one. Antifreeze boils @ 212 degrees - same as water in atmospheric pressure. Water Boils @265 degrees when placed under 16 lbs. pressure. Water and antifreeze will not boil till 265 degrees if radiator holds 16 lbs. pressure wiht a 16 lb. pressure cap.
Antifreeze companies use scare tatics when advertizing boiling points of their products. Very fine unreadable print is pasted with their foolish commercials.

FYI don't put water in your radiator. It doesn't matter if it is winter or not. Antifreeze has a higher boiling point than water so if you put water in your car it could make the thermostat open prematurely and if it is hot enough out side than your car could overheat. Always put antifreeze in your car.

You will lose some but not a lot of water......probably about a 1/2 quart maybe......
Make for sure you look at the thermostat as you take it out.....make sure you put the new one back in the right way.....
