Most people are misinformed. When modified (which most of them are) there enters greater chances of problems. One of the biggest problems is poor modifications. I have a '90 Eclipse GSX that I used to race, had minimal trouble with it (finally jumped timing so she is being retired). I have a Laser (sister car to Eclipse) that is being built to race with the factory engine. Another thing is that they are "made in Japan," which is another misconception. People think that because it says Mitsubishi it can't be made in America. Every Eclipse built to this date was built in Illinois, USA. Just a little side note: world's fastest 4 cylinder in the 1/4 mile is a '95 Eclipse. World's fastest AWD car is an Eclipse (Talon). Just get a stock one (not one that has had a bunch of poor modifications), and you will be fine.

Their poor reputation probably has to do with the very brightly painted ones with huge wings flying through neighborhoods at 60mph making enough noise to piss off everyone. This probably applies more to the over 30 population.

Among the younger drivers, the cars have several short comings:

-expensive to insure
-reliability is ok, but build quality is shaky
-the Evo is the best Mitsubishi
-Mitsu overall rep trails japanese counterparts
-still considered inferior to all but neon/ion/cavalier
-prev gen motors only so so (3.0 V6 no great shakes stock)
-secretaries drive wussy 4 banger versions
-interiors so so
-mitsu reputation made worse by financing anyone, and marketing to wrong demo
-still a good many beaters out their that are well past their prime, and everyone remembers the really junky one they saw

I've always heard good things about a Mitsubishi Eclipse. My daughter has a Mitsubishi Mirage and she just loves it. It has some get up and go power to it.

They are no worse than most and not as good as some. Some recurring issues seem to be cam belts and tire wear. However on Mitsubishi's side I must add that the crowd who drive them are not astute as far as maintenance. Toyota and Honda seem to have better reputations, but Mitsubishi has been making cars for longer than either of them.

My sister had one for her first car. It was cheaply made, as if the entire car were made out of plastic, and not very sturdy. The factory tires that came with it failed on her within a few months, nearly killing us on the highway. Her gas mileage was laughable. She constantly had trouble with the wiring and fuses that cause the headlights to go berserk. And after about 3 years of regular driving, the engine chassy and pistons had cracked and warped, rendering the car absolutely worthless. But that may have been a singular instance, and not the standard performance of most of their cars.

I have a 90 talon/eclipse awd. Best car EVER! 193018 miles. Bone stock engine. best 1/4 mile in 14.9s.
