Vastu and Feng Shui both use directions and assign body parts to the house but other than that they are completely different. For example the NW is for the father or chief in feng shui and in Vastu that area denotes little girl. So I recommend you not try to apply both Feng Shui and Vastu since they will contradict each other greatly.
As for your question about feng shui, the 8 mansion school uses Gua numbers to divide people into 2 groups east and west group.
If your not from the same group, it just takes compromise.
Ask yourself who is the head of the household. For that person you should find the house that has the correct sitting direction. That would be NW, W, SW and NE if your husband is the head of household. I know he is a West group person because you said the south is bad for him. If the south is good for you then you are an East group person. Then to compensate for him being supported by the house sitting, you should have a bedroom in the E, SE, S or N for your support. If not, at least aim your bed in that direction in whichever sector of the house you are in.

As for your children, they definitely should not overule the head of household because if he/she does not a supportive environment than he/she will not have good chi thus, health/wealth which will eventually affect the whole family. When they grow up and buy their own house they can use their directions to choose the right house. For now they can be nourished by facing their good directions at the dinner table, studying and while sleeping.
All the best chi for your new home.

Personally I would recommend feng shui books that use the black hat school of Feng Shui.

The reason for this is because the form and compass schools of Feng Shui work fine in Asia where houses are built in such a way to harness the flow of ch'i.

The form and compass schools of Feng Shui do not work worth a darn here in the west where home builders build houses that face in all 360 directions.

You have to understand one thing. The door you use the most will bring most of the new ch'i into your home, and the old ch'i flows out the door as you close the door.

The black hat school of Feng Shui has you orient the compass so the door you use the most is at the bottom of the ba gua.

I can HIGHLY recommend "Move Your Stuff: Change Your Life" by Karen Rauch Carter. It is based on the black hat school of Feng Shui.

There are other titles that use the Black Hat School; but this is the only book title that immediatelt leaps to mind.

fengshui is based on many formulas. i am sure that you are basing your answer on the 8 mansions, which ms. lillian too made popular. but this is not the only concept/ formula. there are a lot more to consider. and most of them are not clear cut - meaning, it is case to case basis.

for example, it is bad to face east for your kids - yes according to 8 mansions. but there is a certain direction in the east that makes your house to have a double 8, which is very auspicious. this is based on flying stars. so, you see... in fengshui, it is better to consult a fengshui professional who will assess you, your family and hour new house. besides that, you can even ask for some extra fengshui solution to attract money in the house - like a water dragon.

and that is just the half of it. the location of your house is also important, in relation to the road, river, etc. formations around the house is also as important as what is in it. it affects the behavior of everyone inside the house.

fengshui is about precise measurement, calculation and proper installment of the solutions. it is not if your door should face east, you just tilt your door to face it. it is more complicated than that. you need to use a compass or a luo pan and do the measuring, and tilt it precisely at a particular degree.

contrary to what most people have read, fengshui is not putting a mirror here, a windchime there and everything will be alright. i guess all writers wants people to buy their books, while all people like a quick fix. that is why most writers do only about the quick fixes.

Please buy a good house, you love and can afford. Trust your intuition and pray for Guidance. Feng shui warns, but it also offers remedies for the "unlucky" directions of the front home entrances--door colour, chimes, and more, also you can use any other door ( kitchen door or a garage door) as the door you or other members of your family use to enter the house, if you wish, please search further on web or consult a reputable feng shui practitioner. Good luck!
