Loyalists- Those colonists that fought or supported the English crown against declaring independence. Motives varied.
John Adams estimated that 1/3 of the colonists where loyalist, and another third where neutral, apathetic, or opportunistic.
After 1783 many Loyalists settled in the Maritime provinces, in the Bahamas, in other parts of the West Indies, and England. They lost their property it was confiscated.

In the beginning most Americans wanted to stay British. They considered themselves British. They just wanted to make a few changes in how they were governed. America wasn't like India where British ruled over a different culture. America was a British culture. So the Americans didn't hate the British because they consider themselves British. The British also thought of the Americans as British citizens. So when this revolution started the British thought of them more as unruly children not foreign subjects. Independence wasn't what was originally desired just more autonomy. But things got out of hand and we ended up independent The revolution is more interesting in the long version so read up on it.

The history classes I have taken describe it as about a third of the people wanted to remain British, a third wanted to secede and the other third didn't really care. These are approximations, they didn't have the Gallup poll then.
If you remember Ben Franklin and what a staunch revolutionary he was, then realize his son was a Royal Governor and went to England after the war, you can see there were splits even among families.
