Personally you gotta few options. I prefer to get some Tarn-X, readily available at any store, Wal-Mart, Target, Vons, Ralphs, etc...
Use some in a glass bowl, toss in yer change and then hand clean them with a clean cloth.
Ok, you can also get some brasso, apply some to a rag and rub away on the coins.
Another way is to get a dremel tool with a buffing wheel attachment, it'll shine it right up. Or if you have a grinder you can attach a buffing wheel and clean them up that way too, just make sure you use something to hold them in place, like a wooden clamp.

Do you know anyone with a tumbler? (Rock tumbler or one for cleaning up brass shells for reloading.) When used with crushed walnut shells it will remove crud very effectively and shine them up as well. (This of course assumes this is just ordinary spending money! Consult a collecting expert before trying to clean any valuable coins.)

I found a corroded buffalo nickel when we plowed for our garden last year. I soaked it for about a week in olive oil and would occaisionally change the oil. lt help enough to read the date.

You can use the same stuff you would use for silverware or pots and pans. When my kids were little, they used all my copper polish on pennies, LOL. It kept them busy for most of the afternoon on a rainy day....

I think you let it soak in vinegar and then take a brillo pad and scrub it off then rinse with water.
