That's a misnomer, its not always "dark" on the dark side of the moon...it would be more appropos to call it the "far" side of the moon since its the side that never faces the Earth. The moon spins on its axis at the same rate it revolves around the Earth and there are occcasions when its "far" side is facing the sun (when we have solar eclipses, for example)..

Sorry to burst your bubble but Pink Floyd was actually wrong, since there technically is no dark side of the moon. One side always faces us, and the other side faces away. In full moons, the sight facing us (technically the "light side") is reflecting sunlight. But during a new moon, the "dark side" is facing away still, but the sun is shining on that part instead. So there is always a darker half, but it always varies.

The dark side is the side away from the sun. When you look at the moon (unless it is full) you can see some of the dark side. The dark side is lit by starlight but mostly light reflected from the earth (Earthglow) and it is brighter than moonlight. The closer the moon is to full, the darker the dark side is because there is less light from the earth. At the full moon, the dark side gets only starlight and is darker than even the darkest moonless night here on Earth.

The side not facing us. That side never faces us. The part you see lit up with earthshine when the moon is less than full is the same side that is lit up when the moon is full. The guy above me is very mistaken. The dark side never ever faces us. The darkside can't possibly ever get light from the earth.

The "bright side" of the moon always faces the earth while the "Dark side" always faces away from the earth. The term "dark side" is a bit of a misnomer because it revieves just as much sunlight as the the bright side, it's just that we don't see it.

The side which is not facing the sun. Neither side is permanently dak hence the phases of the moon such as the new moon where only a sliver is visible. That is because the other side is illuminated.

The one facing away from us! The bright side is glowing from reflected sunlight and we see the craters etc.....The darkness also happens when the earth is between the sun and the moon forming a shadow....
The links below will show you how it happens.
