The attraction is simply the feeling you get when you take them. It produces an altered state of consciousness that some find pleasurable.
Then again, what's legal and what's not is a simple act of legislation. What is illegal now once wasn't. In some places, and in some times, sugar was a controlled substance, as it's quite addictive.
If you've taken some prescription drugs that made you feel funny, and you enjoyed it, that's the feeling. If you drank a bit of wine and felt good, that's it too. If you've had a great deal of work to do, little time to do it, and wanted to cram late into the night, drinking coffee to accomplish this, that's the same idea.
Different drugs have different effects. People take them for different reasons at different times. Some are addictive, some are not.
Some people take what are considered illegal drugs for spiritual purposes, and in some cultures, this is a very sacred act.
Again, different drugs, different people, different effects, different reasons.

They put you in an altered state that can be quite pleasant. They change your mind's thinking and open it to things that you may never have noticed or considered before; how beautiful the bark is on that tree, how great that song is, how wonderful that photo is. Of course you can't live like that all the time - the world would be in a terrible state - but it can be nice to be away from the real world for a while, like a kind of meditation.

They can make you feel good about yourself and everything around you,keep you awake to party etc,i dont touch them now as i`m a mum but did when i was young and silly.

its just the way they make you feel that is the attraction, i've tried most of them and only some of them are ok, most of them become unbearably dull after a while.

Neither have I. The only thing I have ever tried was to smoke a Marlboro, and hated it.

no attraction, just those who are bored from alchol and looking for more fulfillment but its a downward spiral...stick to a nice pint!!!!!
