DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT KIND OF DAMAGE THIS INSECT CAUSES.

The larvae will eventually destroy the tree. Try to find the eggs and destroy the eggs. Look for patches of lumps or squishy stuff and destroy the eggs. Sawfly damage can be noticed by the defoliation of the tree. They are particulary fond of eating the needles, and bore into the buds. These creatures are not actually flies but are related to wasps. So look for needles that are consumed from off a branch, partially eaten needles and chewing on the bark. The larvae will look like caterpillars. Kill them too.
