Tradition, but also, I believe the woman was marrying into the husbands family, so she took his name.
I know a guy who took the girls last name, but he did that because he was so far in debt, it gave him a new start, somehow, I am not sure, but it did, but it also gave him some respect, where his old name, he lot all of it, no one trusted him, so now he can go around and screw up this name too.

Woman gives birth to the child of his man and it becomes a family all the member in that family belong to the man's genes thats why women takes his last name and it becomes one family.Majority wins. However name is not important mothers and motherhood are given the highest level of all above the name also.

We were originally had the same legal standing as someone's property, then we were upgraded to the legal standing of children. Only recently (within the last 100 years) did we gain equal status.

tradition
seems weird in our ever changing society
I got married 9 months ago and did not take my husband's name.
I know it bothers him, but I want to hyphen it but he thinks that is worse than not taking his name!!

Women and everything women owned became the husband's property. Antiquated and unnecessary.
