Who's going to teach it? Taxpayers should not have to bear the burden of paying for this. If parents want their child to learn a language at a young age it should be their responsibility . When I was a child my parents spoke to me in Italian at home as much as they could! I was able to learn the language of my heritage through them. If parents want their child to learn something other than the language of their heritage, they can always get a private tutor. Public schools have enough to handle without this being piled on top. Reading Writing, English Language Skills and Math should always be top priority in the American Public Elementary Schools. If you can't perform well with English Language Skills, then you certainly won't be able to learn another language. When foreign students come here they are required to go to school after regular school to keep up with the language of their country. They do not wish to lose those skills. They are not taught English when they are in their own country until they are in secondary school and then it's an elective.

Note to ursaital: Alas, the great legislators in Austin have mandated foreign language requirements for high schools in Texas.
