Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (day after Pancake/Shrove Tuesday) and lasts for forty days and nights, ending at Easter. During lent one thing that you enjoy (chocolate/alcohol/cigarettes/etc) should be sacrificed - this represents the forty days and nights that Jesus spent in the desert. It is traditionally observed by those of the Catholic faith.

Lent is a Catholic tradition. You don't eat meat on fridays and you have to give up one thing that you really love, sacrifice it if you will, one week before Easter and then you can have it again after that week. Not eating meat on Fridays begins on ash Wednesday and goes until easter.
