She needs to get over the fears of failure and start talking about what she can do, not what she can't do. Older people (and 40 is not OLD) have more maturity and stability to offer to an employer. Let's face it a 22 year old may seem ideal but they are more inclined to move, have children, not show up for work, etc. Your Mom needs to present herself to an employer with her skills and experiences and offer herself with the features and benefits that she has. If she's worked in sales, she'll know exactly what that means. SHE is the product she's got to be able to sell.

marital status shouldn't matter so much when you look for work, unless maybe somebody wants just be a wife for awhile
anyway, sometimes its slightly more difficult for middle aged folks to find work
there are tons of crappy jobs, mostly easy to get
fewer that are sort of good, usually takes a few weeks to get
usually the really good ones have competition for them, it takes some patience and time, and work just to get hired, any kind of Degree helps a lot with that, or any special skills, or being smart, or being pretty, they will say pretty doesn't matter, it does though. Those could take months to get, if ever.

No she is not too old to get a good job, your never too old. In fact, the population is getting older and older as people are living longer than ever. How sad that a woman in her 40's would feel this way. Alot of companies prefer older workers, they are more reliable and experienced and wise.

For sure! I have been selling for 16 years now 38 and I am finding customers are more likely to buy from me based on experience and comfort level. She should use her age to her advantage. 40 is the new 30! Instead of sales have her try customer service or account rep.

Your mom can do and be what ever she wants in life. She just has to motivate her self and want to do something great. Ask her what she really likes doing and maybe with that she could make a career.

of course she can get a job if she has that much experience... it sounds like she is afraid of being turned down... most employers like older married people because they are reliable and trustworthy

It helps quite a bit to be attractive, no matter what age, and 40 is not old anymore.

I think your Mom may be making excuses for laziness or inertia.
Encourage her.
Good luck.
