It is normal for them to be pretty inactive, they are rather mellow little guys. They should get a little active at feeding times.

No different species of herps (especially amphibians) should be housed together. Amphibians secrete mucous and toxins that don't effect humans if we wash our hands, but can kill other species. Many herps are also known for eating anything that will fit into their mouths - including cage mates. Different species of animals can spread disease to each other, perpetuate cycles of disease, eat each other, poison each other, or simply cause stress by being forced to live in the same enclosure. Putting different species of reptiles and amphibians is a bad decision 99% of the time. You can however get more then one fire belly newt

I would not suggest fire bellied toads in the tank with your newts. Firebellied toads, Bombina orientalis, produce skin toxins that can harm your newt. I would go with some peaceful community fish like guppies, ghost shrimp, snails, maybe some dwarf clawed frogs. In the animal world, the bright red markings on your newt advertise some skin toxins that may make the predators think twice before eating the newt. They are great pets. The newt may eat small fish so plenty of plants may make the difference between cagemates and supper. All amphibians are carnivorous-they eat other animals. They are usually sit and wait predators who wait for supper to come to them rather than going and hunting it up. Good luck and feel free to reply.

I keep fire belly newts, fire belly toads, and guppis in the same tank. They eat a few of the guppies every now and then but I gat a dozen for a dollar so it's no big deal.
