I am running Windows XP Service Pack 2. Recently, while working on my computer for 2+ hours or so, it automatically restarts itself while I'm working. It has been doing this for the past 2 weeks and continues to do so when it's turned on for 2 hours or more. I didnt install anything new to create this problem, it simply started without warning. What is wrong with my computer? I have a 2Ghz Pentium, 512 MB of RAM and the the rest is average everyday stuff. What's wrong with my computer?

I think its power supply if not a virus. Your PSU might be weakening or overheating. Clean the dust from inside the computer and make sure your fan is working properly.

If you've already determined it's not overheating and the memory sticks are good:

Click Start, then open Control Panel

Click Performance and Maintenance

Click System

Click on the Advanced Tab

Click Settings in the Startup and Recovery section

Uncheck Automatically Restart in the System failure section

First run virus, spyware, and adware scans. If it is clean, then you are probably overheating. See if all of your fans are working. Clean out the dust. If the problem persists, by more fans or liquid cooling.

If it's not from a virus or overheating then your hardware might be failing. You may want to take it to a proffessional and have them take a look at it.

Check all the fans for dust, and see if they are working. Keep it where it can get fresh air.

Did you get a new router or a modem? Some people get this problem because the network card has a bad design, at it grounds with the modem/router.

By "restarting" do you mean that it goes through the normal processes of shutting down and restarting, or does the screen blank on you and all of a sudden you're at the beginning of startup? This information is neccessary.

My first thought is you may have a virus of some sort on your machine, update your virus definitions and run a full scan of your computer

Sometimes this is a sign of the power supply going bad.
