One way it affects culture is that people who work "on call" can now attend family functions and religious activites without worry. Back in the "olden days" when I was young, people who work on call had to pretty much stay home. There were pagers but the person had to somehow get to a phone and call into work. Cell phones have given many workers freedom.

Of course this is one - sided. There are many down sides to cell phones also.

Totally disrupts the normal dialogue between humans. There is way to little face to face communication than previously. We are a group "animal" and need to mingle with others. People talk about nothing just to be yakking on the phone. They are not paying attention to those around. They talk while shopping, driving, eating. not healthy. it is also rude. More accidents are taking place due to inattention of surroundings. Less group gatherings, family more fragmented. Not always bad but it is a tool when correctly used can be beneficial. Use for emergencies, to update on travel problems and is good for communication in many instances. In my opinion it has caused a strange effect, that people feed the need to be constantly talking to someone on the telephone. Maybe people feel they do not wish to be alone with their thoughts, or just try and be peaceful for a period of time. It is like if they don't speak to someone all the time they feel something is missing in their life.

People have stopped social interactions, such as going to people homes or meeting to talk about something. Now we just call, text or email (depending on the phone) and it's done. We never have to use a breath on that person. It's faster yes but it's not personal at all.
