development of the mind actually, when they see what the picture looks like when they are done, through memory they can reconstruct that same picture, and it helps with dexterity. It is much like learning how to walk, small steps then larger steps.

It's an activity that entertains them and keeps their mind engaged on something other than mischief. Other than that, and more importantly, it is a good tool that can help children learn counting. When they identify the numbers and count correctly, they get instant feedback that they are doing a good job. Because it's fun, they don't realize that they're learning. That's the best kind of learning.

Following a simple order (1,2,3...) to create something artistic.

My daughter gets pleasantly surprised everytime she completes one (even though you can tell what it is before-hand) and it has taught her the order of numbers beyond 10 or 20
