thanks. only got an hour of sleep last night and i have tons of overdue math. brain far. and im sitting there like "aahhhh what adds to 17 and multiplies to be -18?!?!?!. thanks. except for the guy that said a.

You have to find factors of -18 that add up to +17. In this case it is -1 and 18.

(a-1)(a+18)

look for two numbers that multiply to -18 and add to 17

-1 and 18

(a - 1) (a + 18)

let me see...

(a+18) (a-1)

there is a linear binomial...
the square root of a^2 is (a) in the -nomials...
and to get -18, the multiplication will be either -18 x 1 or 18x-1.
AND to get 17, the positive has to be bigger than the negative, which I get 18 -1 = 17
