step 1: multiply the cost of the cd by the sales tax
14.99 x .15 = 2.25

step 2: add the answer from step 1 to the price of the cd
14.99 + 2.25 = 17.24

There are two ways to do this. The first is to just take the sales price and multiply it by (1+tax rate) or 1.15. This will give you the answer. (14.99 * (1 + .15))

The second is perhaps easier to understand conceptually. You take the sales price and multiply it by the tax rate (14.99 * .15). This gives you the sales tax on an item costing 14.99. Then, you add this piece to the cost and you get the price with tax. ((14.99 * .15) + 14.99)
