Via infrared, you can send or receive data such as business cards and calendar notes to and from a compatible phone or data device.
How to operate: Make sure that the infrared ports of the sending and receiving devices are pointing at each other and that there are no obstructions between the devices. The preferable distance between the two devices is one metre at most.

All the other people are right, But did you know that with some
Palms the infrared feature can be used as a lock. It's commonly used amongst realtors to unlock infrared locks on homes that are available for sale.

In some models like the PPC-6700 you can use the infrared feature to use you phone as a remote control for your tv.

Infrared is used on laptops, you can put two together and transfer files (albeit slowly). I imagine they could work the same technology into mobile phones, to transfer files/ring tones/etc.

You can use infrared to connect to a computer or laptop if they have infrared... I did that once and was able to pull pictures off my phone, etc. I think you need special software for it.

For transferring files, sound, pictures, whatever your model lets you, to other phones/PDAs. As for how to, that'd depend on what phone you have.
