I don't know how to repel them, but catching them is easy. Cut a can open and put beer in it. When the slugs climb up into the can, they will fall inside, get drunk, and drown.
Now... animals might drink the alcohol... but they won't die if there's only a little in there.
Well... a bird might because they have weak stomachs.
Another way to do the same trick, which might be safer for the other animals, is to get a 12 ounce bottle of soda, cut the top half off and tape the top to the nozzle is pointing into the bottle. pour a little beer in the bottle, and set it in your yard so that it is upright. The slugs are attracted to the beer, and they can't get out of the bottle because of how the nozzle is situated, but they can easily get in.

Couple of extra choices, in addition to copper tape and using frogs, some birds, eggshells, coarse grit around choice plants:
There are some organic slug pellets that are safe for all wildlife. Whilst it's not a real deterrent, as they do kills slugs, it does deter them from having babies: Ferramol slug pellets, based on Iron Phosphate, a naturally occurring chemical. Works best after damp, which ruins the nasty old type of slug pellets that aren't good for the environment. (You have to accept that slugs are part of your natural local ecosystem, so you're going against nature to want to get rid of them, depriving other animals of their food source).
Otherwise, design your garden to keep slug-desirable plants in more difficult to get to spots, eg. in pots, with the pots circled with copper tape, and no trailing stems that would allow slugs to crawl up on, from the ground.
A second natural method I use are tiny little natural creatures called Nematodes, too little for our eyes to really see. You water a mix on your garden and then they go away and find the slugs. These attack slugs and cause them to die, indirectly from other causes, within a few days, after burying themselves underground. I've used them with great success.
http://www.wigglywigglers.co.uk sell them and other natural methods of control for other garden pests.
Good luck! Rob

I've heard gardeners recommend beer - and not lite beer, either. The slugs are attracted to the brew, become intoxicated and die. New slugs stay away. I've used this method with some success.

Now don't take this the wrong way but....urine works very well. BUT if you don't like that idea use vinegar. It basically has the same properties that urine has to repel slugs!

copper flashing. They don't like to crawl over copper flashing as it is reported they receive a small electrical jolt. You can edge planting beds and circle tree trunks with the flashing.
Remember slugs slime around so anything coarse will just be slimed over.

Egg shells. Just break them up into small pieces and scatter around the shoots of your plants.
Pouring salt on your soil may also kill whatever you are trying to grow...
