I am taking ASL this semester and I feel a lot a bit behind. I'd like to meet people from the community, but I don't really know where to go.

The coffee socials can be great but also intimidating if you don't know anyone. I think me going to meetings at DCARA helped. I attended an ALDA meeting as well as free movie night. Dcara also has a listing of upcoming events for the Deaf and HOH all over the Bay Area so you might want to check their website. The link is below.

By the way, I'm Late deafened so being prelingual and trying to fit in in the deaf community isn't very easy but I'm getting there.

A great way to get to know people in the deaf community would be going to the monthly or bi monthly deaf socials at your local Starbucks or coffeehouse. They are advertised on this site http://www.deafchatcoffee.com Click on California and find the one that meets closest to you.

Just go and introduce yourself and ask around who would be interested in tutoring or who may know someone that can help. It's also a great way to practice your signing skills and make new friends! Deaf people are very social and very approachable, easy to know right away, so don't be nervous!

Also there's a great and very active deaf forum http://www.alldeaf.com It has thousands of members of the deaf community. The Deaf community is a small world, so also ask on there what you're looking for and don't be surprised if people from your area reply. I've checked that site out, and it has great discussions on all kinds of topics.

Hope that helps!
