In my humble opinion, there are no "best" surnames. There are some that you hear more than others, and some that you seldom hear. My surname is a relatively unknown name. Most people can't spell it, and some can't pronounce it! When we move into a new town, we are the only ones with the name in the phone book! I would not want to be a Smith or Jones, as they are very common names.

I think what would make the best surname would be one that is easy to spell and easy to pronounce. Perhaps even one that kids can't make fun of.

I like my name, and have had no real problems with it. I think it could be classified as one of the best surnames around.

Names that can't be picked on by other kids in school I think are the best surnames. Like Ellis, James, Carlton. Just quite plain but nice names.
