Is it a requirement by law to put makeup on the deceased?? Some of them look so clown like that they are almost unrecognizable. Can someone request not to have makeup on doing a viewing/funeral?? Also why is embalming required for a viewing? What would happen if a body wasn't embalmed and we viewed it anyway?

Please do not answer if you do not know the official answers to these questions. Thanks

No, it is not a law to wear the make-up, but it is necessary for a person to be embalmed for a public viewing, as a dead body harbors an immense amount of bacteria and possibly infection. Perhaps you have been to a funeral home that uses too much make-up, I personally use as little as possible so that the person looks as natural as possible. A person could request no make-up, but I can guarantee you would not like the results. Take care.

Have you ever seen a person 3 days dead without makeup? what give skin it's color is the blood flowing through the body. The skin of a caucasian is a gross grey color.

Embalming is required for a viewing becasue the body begins to decompose IMMEDIATELY upon death. It begins to smell within just a few hours. By the time of a viewing, decay would be visible and the stentch would be horrendous! ( Think about the story of Lazarus- Martha didn't want the tomb opened because it had been 3 days and it would smell)

A mortician has a difficult job- they need to make someone they never saw alive LOOK asleep instead of dead. It would be awful for the family to have a viewing without makeup.

Muslims and some Jews don't allow embalming- that is why they have the burial so quickly after death- usually by sundoen the day after death.

a dead body can start to stink within a day or two, and it usually takes almost a week to plan a funeral thats why embalming is nessicary. and about the makup, have you ever seen a dead person (dead for at least 8 hours) without makeup? they really do look grey its not good, of course, its always hard to see a loved one in a casket, but if they really look the way they would w/out makeup it would be alot harder to deal with seeing them like that.

When i do the embalming i use enough dye in the fluid that i almost NEVER!! have to use alot of make up.

As far as embalming being required........its only required if your gonna have a PUBLIC VIEWING (Private not required) with an open casket. Not required for closed casket.
