I've been a huge Laker fan since I was 6 years old. Magic Johnson is my all time favorite athlete. Even I think Michael Jordan was a better player. The proof of this, for me, is a certain 2 week stretch in which, due to a teammate's injury, Jordan was forced to play point guard. He had 4 triple doubles in a row and ended up with a trip/doub 70-80% of the time he was at the point. Magic was the trip/doub king (after Oscar Robertson) and even he never did that. For me, Magic is a definite top fiver in terms of all around production with Oscar Robertson and Larry Bird in the mix (and Kobe, Wade, Lebron knocking at the door), but Jordan is still #1.

OK, forget this New Mr G character who posted this! Why is he trying to be "holier than thou!"
The better all around player is, well, you have to look at both of their achievements and abilities. Magic Johnson is the greatest team player and Michael Jordan is the greatest individual player. Jordan has more points and rings and Johnson has more assists. For my choice, it's Michael Jordan because no one had a better killer instinct than Michael Jordan. He was so consumed not with just beating you on the court, but he also wanted to put you away so you would never be a threat to compete with him ever again!

This a opinion Question and these only start arguements. But Magic was in every finale except 1986 ,89 in the 80's so he was the gunslinger who took on all From Doc to Mike and the Bad Boyz abd took a team with Divac as the rookie center to a finals even though they got killed. So i always pick Magic.

We're not talking of whose the greatest but the better all around player so i will take Magic Johnson because he can still dominate and have a great impact in a game without scoring a point compared to MJ who is synonymous to scoring.

Hi, Brent. I didn't know you spend your time in the basketball forum, too. Anyway, it's nice to see you here. Shall we proceed to the topic?
"Magic" Johnson and Michael Jordan have more similarities than differences. They were both crowd-pleasers and they both played the game of basketball with unique passion and desire in competition. They both took the game seriously and they were visionaries of their respective eras. Johnson was a team-first type of player whereas Jordan looked to score(not to say he was a ballhog because he was certainly not.) Johnson and Jordan are almost equal in terms of talent, however, Jordan had more dexterity in defense. He was more skilled in blocking and he could also make steals. Jordan had more defense. That's what makes Jordan a greater all-around player than Johnson.

Both players were quality players. The one thing that always got me with M.J. was his desire to beat you and challenge himself in the process. The year he closed his eyes at the free throw line and made them was awesome. The way he would go over to the opponents bench and tell their coach he'd better put someone else on him because he was killing him made him a great chess strategist at the game as well. As for Magic, he and Larry Bird helped save the NBA when they entered the league. Many great players were from that time and if you watch vintage film you will get to enjoy a great deal more than just teams playing to win. You see the real love for the game and respect the players had for one another's ability!

"Magic"
he's a 6'9 point guard who has had to play every single position in the NBA.
He has won 5 NBA titles in 10 years
Probably could have won more if he wasn't forced to retire.
He had over 900 assist every single year he played on top of his over 20 ppg.
Magic Also had that Killer instinct when it came to winning. He did whatever it took to win and i would say his instinct was just as big if not bigger than jordan.
As for my team I would take Magic over jordan anyday but if were talkin one-on-one and scoring ability thats without a doubt jordan

I don't they can be fairly compared.
My thing is this I would not compare Kobe and Mike because the game has change so much between their individual times. So I could not fairly chose between the two without seeing them play at the same level of the game at the same time. But I am partial to MJ just because I am biased of the name Micheal(<--yes it's spelled right) be it that it is the names of my hubby and child. But the real MJ is a butt to his wife and fans so over overall I would chose Majic for his performance on and off the court!!! Go Nets!!!

Michael Jordan is the greatest player of all time, and the greatest all-around player of all time.
He is the greatest offensive player (how many scoring titles?)
He is the greatest defensive player of all time (defensive player of the year; and 2nd most steals in NBA history).
He is a great playmaker (the countless passes to his shooters for game winning/tying shot).
Magic couldn't play defense to save his life, and he was way too slow.
