Athena is the Greek goddess of wisdom and crafts. She was the parthenogenic daughter of Zeus and patron deity of Athens. Her Roman counterpart was Minerva.

Athena is said to be the offspring of Zeus alone, but that was only after the Oceanid Metis became pregnant and Zeus swallowed her. By swallowing the Oceanid and her unborn child, Zeus became pregnant with Athena. Zeus wasn't built to deliver a baby, and he seems to have gestated the baby in his head. The solution: Hephaestus (or Prometheus) struck open Zeus' head with an axe to release the goddess Athena, who emerged from her father's head fully armed.

Marko had most of it right, let me add a couple more details... Athena was the goddess of wisdom, the arts/crafts, and righteous war, as well as the patron of Athens. She is Ares' half-sister; his mother was Hera, hers was Metis; but Zeus is father to both.
Ares was the god of war--any war, war for the sake of war, and generally associated with trouble and any bloody & senseless conflict. Try searching for Eris, Deimos, Phoebos (sp?)--they were minor deities attached to Ares, & why the planet Mars has the last 2 as moons. He was also a coward (see the Iliad for him running away from a mortal warrior) & a lech, cuckolding his brother.
Mars is the Roman name for Ares (I don't think the constellation Aries has much to do with it), and she is Minerva in Rome.
